“AZERSUN HOLDING” TOOK PART IN THE EVENT ON “GENERAL SALT IODIZATION”

“Azersun Holding” took part in the round-table discussion “On Iodine Deficiency Diseases - achievements, problems and perspectives on general salt iodization” organized by the Ministry of Health of Azerbaijan and UNİCEF.

The Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Parliament on Social Policy Mr. Hadi Rajabli,  Head of UNICEF Azerbaijan Mr. Georgi Gerasimov made their speeches in the event on the regional situation with general salt iodization.  Then the representatives of the Ministry of Economic Development, Azerbaijan Technical University, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Health, the State Committee on Standardization, Meteorology and Patent, and “Azersun Holding” made speeches. The employee of “Azersun Holding” Mr. Mehran Mammadov made a presentation on the salt factory and informed the participants about this project. Mr. Akif Asgarov, the Head of the Research, Development and Quality Center on Agrarian Issues of “Azersun Holding” made a speech on the factory’s operations and production, and answered to the questions during the follow-on discussion.

The big importance of the commencement of operations of the salt iodization factory by the group of companies was repeatedly stressed during the discussion on the iodine deficiency problems in the country. Thus, along with prevention of the marketing of false iodized salt in the country market, this remarkable effort made by “Azersun Holding” also will enable the people of the country to get hygienic and ecologically clean iodized salt produced on the international standards and based on the most up-to-date technologies.

The project of the salt factory is also in the attention focus of the State bodies. Promotion of implementation of the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On General Salt Iodization” directed to mass prevention of iodine-deficiency diseases was one of the objectives of the held event.

It is planned that the salt factory constructed by “Azersun Holding” near Masazir salt lake will cover 100% of the country’s demand for iodized salt and will get the raw product from the lake and through imports. The factory will be fully provided with international standard equipment and will start high-quality product production. 

The salt used for livestock was also touched upon during the meeting. The specialists emphasized that the low-quality salt used in the livestock sector also resulted in iodine deficiency and a number of related diseases and pathologies.  Along with this, they underlined that utilization of the low-quality salt negatively affected the development and productivity of great and small cattle.

The other topic been discussed at the round-table was on the results of the Bio-monitoring conducted in 2007 on iodine-deficiency diseases and  the monitoring on general salt iodization conducted in livestock farms and food production enterprises in 2008.

Increase of attention and focus of the relevant governmental bodies, private sector and media to the importance of implementation of the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On general Salt Iodization” from production to marketing, identification of the measures to be undertaken by the line ministries and relevant governmental agencies, at the same time, the responsibility of the private sector and civil society in this process were among the main issues discussed during the event.

Taking into account the above-mentioned it should be specifically emphasized that the important step made by “Azersun Holding” in this direction – the salt factory project, is of great importance.
